The original inscription on the cover of the manuscript reads: “Odes to the Moon: Four Lyrics to the Tune of Po Luo Men.” As the title indicates, the lyrics mainly pay tribute to the moon and also depict the story of a Buddhist monk who accompanies Tang Emperor Xuanzong to visit the Moon Palace. It is an adaptation of the original legend with a Buddist monk replacing a Taoist priest, taken as a self-show of monks. |
