想象力，同“想像力”，是指人们通过头脑中加工、改组旧表象，最后创造出新形象、新思想的能力，马克思在《马克思恩格斯论艺术》称想象力是“十分强烈地促进人类发展的伟大天赋”。（1）德国康德哲学用语，是指人的一种认识能力。指形成表象并把表象联接于知性或理性的心灵能力。康德在《纯粹理性批判》和《判断力批判》中提出，认为这种盲目但是不能缺少的心理机能分为再生的想象力（即回忆或联想的能力）和产生的想象力（是先天的、自发地规定和统一感性的能力），“想象力是一个创造性的认识功能；它有本领，能从真正的自然界所呈供的素材里创造出另一个相象的自然界”。“想象力是由多种因素复合而成的智力结构，包括观察力、记忆力、分析力、综合力、判断力、推测力、注意力、选择力等等。判断想象力水平的高低，主要看这些智力因素的综合性配合和活跃的程度”（朱立元，2010）。（2）美学用语。主要是指在审美、创造美中根据联想、想象、幻想将各种相关形象、记忆表象加以组合，主要达到认识对象和创造新形象的能力。意大利马佐尼认为想象力和艺术创造的心理功能相联系，维柯指出艺术靠想象力，推理力和想象力反向相关，推理力弱则想象力强，黑格尔认为想象力是天生的和后天的学习训练，想象力有再现的与创造的两种（蒋永福等，2000：837-838）。再现性想象力和创造性想象力都是以知觉材料为基础，经过新的配合而创造出新形象的能力，只不过再现性想象力侧重将语言、文字塑造的间接形象再造成感性的直接形象的能力，创造性想象力则侧重指将各种形象、表象、意象加以组合，最后创造出超现实、超时空新形象的能力。
