定义
心物二元论的正式提出最早源于笛卡尔的《哲学原理》。该书详细阐释了笛卡尔的哲学体系，即心物二元论（冯契，徐孝通，2000：708）。心物二元论指的是心灵实体与物质实体的分离、对立。笛卡尔认为心灵与物质是完全对立的，是两种完全不同的实体。物质实体对于人体而言即肉体，是可以触摸、可以感受的客观存在。而心灵实体则恰恰相反，是非物质的存在，不可以使用科学对其进行研究。因此，心灵实体与物质实体截然对立，互不依赖，这样就在形而上学上出现了“心物二元论”。同时，“心物二元论”也导致了时间和空间的“二分”（张严，2012：26-27）。值得注意的是，笛卡尔是虔诚的罗马天主教徒，这也影响了他的哲学体系。在笛卡尔看来，心灵在此可以等同于灵魂，因而，灵魂也与物质相对立（philosophy of mind. via: http://www.philosophyonline.co.uk/oldsite/pom/pom_substance_dualism.htm）。这样的想法也与灵魂是完全独立于物质世界的领域的神学思想相契合（mind-body dualism. via: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mind%E2%80%93body_dualism#Cartesian_dualism）。
