所谓“工具理性”（instrumental reason, instrumental rationality），“就是通过实践的途径确认工具（手段）的有用性，从而追求事物的最大功效，为人的某种功利的实现服务。工具理性是通过精确计算功利的方法最有效达至目的的理性，是一种以工具崇拜和技术主义为生存目标的价值观，所以“工具理性”又叫“功效理性”或者说“效率理性”。工具理性（Instrumental Reason）是法兰克福学派批判理论中的一个重要概念，其最直接、最重要的渊源是德国社会学家马克斯·韦伯（Max Weber）所提出的“合理性”（rationality）概念。马克思·韦伯首先将理性对立表述为“工具的合理性与价值的合理性”，即工具理性和价值理性。价值理性相信的是一定行为的无条件的价值，强调的是动机的纯正和选择正确的手段去实现自己意欲达到的目的，而不管其结果如何。而工具理性是指行动只由追求功利的动机所驱使，行动借助理性达到自己需要的预期目的，行动者纯粹从效果最大化的角度考虑，而漠视人的情感和精神价值（via: http://baike.so.com/doc/6220135-6433426.html）。工具理性与价值理性是促进社会发展和学生健康发展的前提条件。工具理性和价值理性的源头最早可以追溯到古希腊时期。当时的价值理性追求的是人的价值，其最基本的问题是“人是什么”（孙峰,2010：73）。
