后殖民主义是20世纪80年代之后兴起的一种社会政治批判思潮（金炳华，2003：1015），探寻的是过去的殖民统治对殖民者和被殖民者文化的影响以及这种殖民关系的衍生品和它在现今的表现形式及实际情况（李鹏程，2003：133） 。后殖民主义是后现代主义思潮中的一个重要部分（金炳华，2003：1015）。后殖民主义是跨越历史、哲学、文学、心理学、人类学的综合性思潮，涉及帝国文化、殖民话语、西方中心主义中的东方的历史再现、全球性话语中的民族文化再现和世界边缘化中的种族、阶级、性别的关系等诸多问题（王治河，2004：295）。1978年萨义德的《东方学》的出版标志着后殖民主义在西方世界作为一种思潮出现（金炳华，2003：1015）。后殖民主义主要的思想来源包括后结构主义、马克思主义和女权主义，因而后殖民主义思潮大致分为三大流派，一是以萨义德、斯皮瓦克与霍米·芭芭等人为代表的后结构主义流派，一是以阿赫麦德为代表的马克思主义流派，一是以莫汉蒂为代表的女性主义流派（王治河，2004：295）。由于后现代主义在语言和思想转译方面的影响，后殖民主义思潮中的“殖民”的社会、经济以及政治内涵已经淡化甚至消失，“殖民主义”转化为全球性的逻各斯中心主义、本质主义、西方中心主义和男性主义等话语霸权的同义语（金炳华，2003：1015），进而，作为殖民主义的历史社会基础的资本主义被偷换成为后殖民主义的文化帝国和话语霸权理论，后殖民主义成为抽象繁琐的语言思辨（王治河，2004：295）。
