An American archaeologist and art historian. He graduated from Harvard. In 1924 he arrived in Dunhuang for the first time and prepared for the large-scale removal of wall paintings. Over the course of ten days he applied fabric coated with chemical adhesives to wall paintings and removed dozens of Tang Dynasty masterpieces from Mogao Caves 335, 321, 323, and 320. He took these paintings—as well as a painted Buddha statue from Cave 328—back with him to the US.
