定义

指中国从1840年鸦片战争开始，到1949年中华人民共和国成立之前的社会。半殖民地，相对于完全殖民地而言，是指形式上是有独立的国家和政府，但实际上在政治、经济等各方面都受到外国殖民主义的控制和奴役。半封建，相对于完全的封建社会而言，是指形式上仍是封建统治和自然经济占主导，但实际上资本主义因素正在不断发展壮大（戴世锋，2013：43）。中国的半殖民地半封建社会，是随着资本—帝国主义侵略的不断扩大，与中国封建势力结合的逐渐加深而形成的，它有一个不断演变的过程。半殖民地半封建社会有以下一些基本特征：1.外国侵略势力不但操纵了中国的财政、经济命脉，而且操纵了中国的政治、军事力量。2.中国封建势力日益衰弱并与外国侵略势力相勾结，成为侵略势力压迫奴役中国人民的社会基础和统治支柱。3.中国自然经济的基础虽然遭到破坏，但封建地主的土地所有制仍然在广大地区内保持。4.民族资本主义经济虽然产生并在中国政治的、文化生活中起到了一定的作用，但是在帝国主义和封建主义的压迫下，发展缓慢，力量软弱，而且它的大部分和帝国主义和封建主义有着或多或少的联系。5.由于中国处于资本–帝国主义列强的争夺和间接统治下，加上中国的土地广大，以及地方割据势力的存在，旧中国经济、政治、文化的发展表现出极端的不平衡。6.由于受到多重压迫，广大中国人民尤其是农民日益贫困化，并大批的破产，过着饥寒交迫的和毫无政治权利的生活（《中国近现代史纲要》编写组，2015：13-14）。
