The Twelve Nidānas

定义

众生在三世六道轮回的次第缘起，即无明、行、识、名色、六入、触、受、爱、取、有、生、老死。

These are the twelve links in the chain of existence (the samsara cycle of death and rebirth). Each link is caused by its predecessor and causes its successor: (1) avidyā, or ignorance; (2) saṃskāra, or constructive activity; (3) vijñāna, or consciousness; (4) nāmarūpa, or name and form; (5) ṣa yatana, or the six sensory organs (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind); (6) sparśa, or physical contact; (7) vedanā, or feeling; (8) ṛṣṇā, or craving; (9) upādāna, or clinging; (10) bhava, or being (11) jāti, or birth; (12) and jarāmaraṇa, or old age and death.
