定义

事物自身中的矛盾，事物内部各方面、各要素之间的对立统一，与“外部矛盾”相对。一切事物和现象都存在着内部矛盾。德国哲学家黑格尔在人类认识史上第一个明确提出，他认为：“某物之所以有生命，只是因为它自身包含矛盾，并且诚然是把矛盾在自身中把握和保持住的力量” (黑格尔，1974：67)。列宁在《谈谈辩证法问题》中提出研究事物的运动和变化，要把主要的注意力“放在认识‘自己’运动的泉源上”（列宁，1990：306）。1925年斯大林根据当时苏联社会的现实情况，第一次将社会矛盾区分为“内部的矛盾”和“外部的矛盾”，认为无产阶级和农民之间的矛盾是内部的矛盾，而苏维埃和资本主义国家的矛盾是外部矛盾。毛泽东在《矛盾论》中把事物运动发展的根本原因称之为“内部的矛盾性”或“内部矛盾”，说：“事物内部的这种矛盾性是事物发展的根本因”(毛泽东，1991：301)，“自然界的变化，主要地是由于自然界内部矛盾的发展”(毛泽东，1991：302)。事物内部的矛盾双方既统一又斗争，推动着事物的运动和发展。自然界的运动变化，在于自然界自身固有的矛盾运动；社会的发展也在于社会内部生产力和生产关系、经济基础和上层建筑之间的矛盾运动。事物的内部矛盾决定事物的本质特征。世界上的事物之所以千差万别，就在于其内部矛盾的不同。具体事物的内部矛盾性，就是事物的个性、特殊性，认识和把握具体事物的特殊性，就要研究各个具体事物的内部矛盾性。内部矛盾和外部矛盾是辩证统一的关系。内部矛盾的存在和发展受外部矛盾的制约和影响。内部矛盾和外部矛盾的区分是有条件、相对的。在一定场合是外部矛盾，在另一场合则可成为内部矛盾。依据系统论的等级结构思想，每个系统客体同它周围环境的关系表现为内部矛盾和外部矛盾的关系。如果把这一系统客体当作包含着它的环境在内的较大系统的一个组成部分来看待，那末原来的外部矛盾就变成为内部矛盾；反之亦然（金炳华，2003：247）。“内部矛盾”在中国多用于指“人民内部矛盾”，所谓的人民内部矛盾是与阶级矛盾相伴的概念。阶级矛盾是不可调和的，人民内部矛盾是可以解决的。刘少奇在提到人民内部矛盾时指出：“这种矛盾和关系是工人阶级和人民内部的矛盾和关系，因此，应该用同志的、和解的、团结的办法来处理这种矛盾”（刘少奇，1985：94）。在现阶段，在建设社会主义的时期，一切赞成、拥护和参加社会主义建设事业的阶级、阶层和社会集团，都属于人民的范围；一切反抗社会主义革命和敌视、破坏社会主义建设的社会势力和社会集团，都是人民的敌人。
