日本人，号湖南。生于秋田县鹿角市的儒学世家，毕业于秋田师范专科学院，先任小学教员，后为记者。1899年至中国游历，著《燕山楚水》。1909年11月分别从住北京的东京文求堂书店主人田中庆太郎和京师大学堂的罗振玉处，得到伯希和在北京展示敦煌写本的消息和部分照片，立刻在大阪《朝日新闻》上连续发表《敦煌石室发现物》、《敦煌发掘的古书》，首次向日本学界介绍敦煌文书的发现及其价值。

A Japanese historian and sinologist, also known as Naito Konan. He was born in a Confucianist family in Kazuno, Akita. Later he graduated from Kazuno Teacher’s College. At first, he was a primary school teacher and then he became a journalist. In 1899 he toured China and wrote his travel notes Yan Mountain & Chu Water. In November 1907, he received news and photographs of the exhibition in which Paul Pelliot had shown Dunhuang manuscripts in Beijing. He quickly reported the news in Asahi Shimbun, the Japanese daily newspaper. His two reports: Findings at Dunhuang Rock Caves and Ancient Books Found in Dunhuang, were the first introduction to the Japanese academic community of the discovery and the value of the Dunhuang manuscripts.
