唐代流行的由僧徒向世俗大众通俗讲解演绎佛经经文(或其他通俗故事)的一种讲唱形式。由六朝以来释家讲经发展演变而形成。

A form of chanting by monks and disciples of Buddhist scriptures (or other folk stories) to an audience of lay people during the Tang Dynasty. It originated from the practice of sutra preaching or sutra lectures by monks or nuns during the Five Dynasties.
