凤首阮咸出现在敦煌壁画第9窟(晚唐)，其东披上部自鸣乐中有一件凤首阮咸图像，十分独特，音箱圆形，与阮咸音箱相同，琴头为凤首形状，琴杆略弯曲，是工艺画工们的有意夸张。第100窟(五代)北壁经变乐队中也有一件凤首阮咸，比第9窟的凤首阮咸稍大，琴杆也呈弯曲状。

It is found on the east wall of Cave No.9 (Late Tang Dynasty). There is a distinctive image of Ruan Xian with Phoenix Head with a round sound box. The head of Ruan Xian imitates the head of a phoenix and its neck is slightly curved to show its elegance. Another one is found among the sutra illustration band in Cave No.100 (the Five Dynasties). It is also shaped with a curved neck but with slightly bigger body than that in Cave No.9.
