The caisson (zaojing, "algae well") is a traditional Chinese ceiling decoration whose sunken panels each resemble a well. In Mogao Cave 35, constructed during the Song Dynasty, the caisson ceiling is decorated with rounded floral designs encircling the embossed sculptures of gilded coiled dragons.
