1.数量一般大，地位或程度一般高 (of two or more people or objects) equal in quantity, status or degree：相～ xiāngděng equal/ 一加二～于三 Yī jiā èr děngyú sān. One plus two is equal to three./ 男女权利平～ Nán-nǚ quánlì píngděng. Men and women enjoy equal rights. ［等闲 -xián］平常 ordinary fig. 轻易地，不在乎地 lightly; casually：莫作～～看 mò zuò děngxián kàn Don't treat him lightly!
2.级位，程度的分别 class; rank ( comb. -级 -jí rank)：立了一～功 lìle yīděnggōng have won a first class merit citation/ 特～英雄 tèděng yīngxióng special class hero/ 何～快乐 héděng kuàilè How happy (we are)!
3.类，群 kind; group 1.表示多数 indicating a plural number of people：我～ wǒ děng we/ 你～ nǐ děng you/ 彼～ bǐ děng they 2.列举后煞尾 indicating the end of an enumeration：北京、天津、武汉、上海、广州～五大城市 Běijīng, Tiānjīn, Wǔhàn, Shànghǎi, Guǎngzhōu děng wǔ dà chéngshì the five major cities of Beijing, Tianjin, Wuhan, Shanghai, and Guangzhou 3.表示列举未完 (indicating an unfinished enumeration) and so on; and so forth (叠 redup.)：张同志、王同志～五人 Zhāng tóngzhì、 Wáng tóngzhì děng wǔ rén five comrades including Mr Zhang, Mr Wang, and so on/ 煤、铁～～都很丰富 méi、tiě děngděng dōu hěn fēngfù be rich in coal, iron and so on
4.待，候 wait; await ( comb. -待 -dài wait, -候 -hòu await)：～一下再说 děng yīxiàr zàishuō Put it off for a moment./ ～不得 děngbude This matter cannot wait.
