啸（嘯）xiào

1.撮口作声，打口哨 make a whistling sound：长～一声，山鸣谷应 Cháng xiào yī shēng, shān míng gǔ yìng. Utter a long and loud cry in the mountains and the sound echos in the valley.
2.动物拉长声音叫 (of certain animals) give a long, loud cry：虎～ hǔ xiào the tiger growling/ 猿～ yuán xiào the ape howling
3.自然界发出的或飞机、子弹飞掠而过的声音 (of nature, airplane or bullets) whistle; whizz：海～ hǎixiào tsunami; seismic sea wave/ 子弹尖～着掠过头上 Zǐdàn jiānxiàozhe lüèguo tóu shɑng. Bullets are whistling overhead./ 飞机尖～着飞向高空 Fēijī jiānxiàozhe fēi xiàng gāokōng. The plane whizzed into the sky. |
