天下有道，以道殉身；天下无道，以身殉道。未闻以道殉乎人者也。· When right principles prevail throughout the empire，a scholar should devote himself to the principles. When right principles disappear from the empire，a scholar should sacrifice his life to save the principles. I have not heard of one's principles being abandoned to meet selfish desires.
