民以食为天 | mín yǐ shí wéi tiān | People regard food as heaven. (literal) • Bread is the staff of life. • The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. • If it were not for the belly the back might wear gold. [同义] 衣食足而后知荣辱 Well fed, well bred. [源] 管子:“王者以民为天,民以食为天。” 《史记》卷97《郦生陆贾列传》:“王者以民人为天,而民人以食为天。(《索隐》:《管子》云:王者以民为天,民以食为天。”)按:今本《管子》无此文。《汉书》卷43《郦食其传》:“王者以民为天,而民以食为天。” |
