1. place, spot, site, location.
a. measure-word for buildings and other items at specific site.
2. marker of object nominalization, i.e., when prefixed to a VB makes a noun phrase referring to the object of the VB: that which (X verbs), that which is (verbed by X); e.g. 從心所欲 cóng xīn suǒyù, to follow what the heart desires; 察其所安chá qí suǒān, to examine that in which he takes comfort; 君子無所爭 jūnzi wú suǒzhēng, there is nothing over which a man of noble status will wrangle.
a. 所以 suǒyǐ, that which is used > wherewithal, means; e.g. 所以養人suǒyǐ yǎng rén, the means for nurturing people; 所以明人倫 suǒyǐ míng rénlún, the means for elucidating human relations; 國之所以廢興存亡 guó zhī suǒyǐ fèixìng cúnwáng, a state’s wherewithal for failing or flourishing, surviving or perishing.
b. 所以 suǒyǐ, that which is used (as a pretext, basis) > reason; e.g. 人之所以求富貴 rén zhī suǒyǐ qiú fùguì, a person’s reason for seeking wealth and high status; 所以謂人皆有不忍人之心 suǒyǐ wèi rén jiē yǒu bùrěn rén zhī xīn, the reason for referring to people as in all cases having a heart that does not brook the suffering of others; (Budd.) 所以者何 suǒyǐzhe hé, what is the reason for it? > what do I mean by (saying) that?
c. 所以 suǒyǐ, that which is used (as a means) > thereby; e.g. 所以尊師 suǒyǐ zūn shī, thereby they esteemed their teacher; 所以報本 suǒyǐ bào běn, thereby recompensing the fundamentals.
d. 所以 suǒyǐ, that which is used (as a pretext, basis, reason) > therefore; e.g. 所以不願人之文繡 suǒyǐ bùyuàn rén zhī wénxiù, therefore he does not wish for the patterned embroideries of others.
e. frequently deleted after 有 yǒu and 無 wú; e.g. 有以 yǒu yǐ (< 有所以 yǒu suǒyǐ ) to have the means for; 無以言 wú yǐ yán (< 無所以言wú suǒyǐ yán) to have no means for speaking.
3. marker of indirect nominalization, i.e., when prefixed to a VB makes a noun-phrase referring to that in relation to which a VB-OBJ clause pertains: that in relation to which or in regard to which > from, where, etc.; e.g. 東日之所出也 dōngrì zhī suǒchū yě, the east is (that in relation to which >) where the sun comes up; 有所受之也 yǒu suǒshòu zhī yě, there was something (in relation to which >) from which he received it.
