释义 | »» 乃 nǎi MC nojX 1. when preceding a VB-phrase, emphasizes sequential or temporal relation between prior circumstances and the action or state of the VB-phrase: then, only then (cog. ér 而 “then”); e.g. 我乃行之 wǒ nǎi xíng zhī, Only then did I put it into practice; 乃可以長生 nǎi kěyǐ chángshēng, Only then can you enjoy a long life. a. with that, given that, thereupon; e.g. 客乃笑而還 kè nǎi xiào ér huán, With that the visitor, laughing, returned; 乃比於狂 nǎi bǐ yú kuáng, Given that, it is comparable to being crazy. b. so, thus; e.g. 乃謂我爲盜跖 nǎi wèi wǒ wéi dàozhí, So they refer to me as Robber Zhi; 王乃說之 wáng nǎi yuè zhī, Thus the king was pleased with it. c. when preceding 今 jīn: from now on, henceforth; e.g. 吾乃今知之 wú nǎi jīn zhī zhī, Henceforth I will know it; 乃今可爲矣 nǎi jīn kě wéi yǐ, From now on it can be done. 2. when preceding noun phrases in nominal sentences, emphasizes the noun predication: indeed, in fact, to be sure; e.g. 是乃仁術也 shì nǎi rénshù yě, This is, to be sure, the art of humaneness; 乃所謂善也 nǎi suǒwèi shàn yě, This is indeed what is referred to as goodness. 3. after 無 wú, makes a rhetorical negative: really not . . . ?, really nothing . . . ?, really doesn’t (isn’t, etc.) . . . ?; e.g. 無乃不察乎 wúnǎi bùchá hū, Is there really nothing to find out about it?; 無乃大簡乎 wúnǎi dàjiǎn hū, Isn’t that really too casual? 4. 2nd-person pronoun: you, your(s); e.g. 乃能從我乎 nǎi néng cóng wǒ hū, Are you able to follow me?; 余嘉乃勳 yú jiā nǎi xūn, I much applaud your success in royal service.
