| 释义 | »» 耳 ěr MC nyiX 1. ear. a. give ear to, listen, hear. 2. sentence-final single-syllable equivalent (and phonetic fusion) of the rhetorical coda phrase 而已 éryǐ “and that is the end of it, and that’s all there is to it, and that’s that”; e.g. 前言戲之耳 qiányán xì zhī ěr, my earlier comments were only in jest about it, that’s all there is to it; 直不百步耳 zhí bù bǎibù ěr, they simply did not go a hundred paces, that’s all. (As with the coda 而已 éryǐ, 耳 ěr is also very often followed by the perfective aspect final GP 矣 yǐ for additional rhetorical effect.)
