Pictured as having scales, whiskers, and five claws per foot. Quintessence and incarnation of the power of water, but a yang symbol equally associated with the heavens; at home in earthly pools and rivers and also in the clouds upon which it depends to rise aloft. Mutable and transformative in nature, a symbol of universal dynamism. Chief among scaly creatures; one of the “four numinous animals” (siling 四靈); associated with the east, the color qing 青, and correspondences related with the phase or agent of wood. a. emblematic of celestial and imperial power; e.g. 龍風 lóngfēng, dragon (i.e. imperial) aura. b. euph. for an exceptional horse. c. euph. for Jupiter, the “year-star” (歲星 suìxīng), because Jupiter associated in wuxing correspondences with phase of wood, whose emblematic animal is the dragon. 2.
