| 释义 | »» 蓮 lián MC len 1. lotus (Nelumbo nucifera), also lotus leaf, lotus seed; cf. 荷 hé, 芙蓉 fúróng, 芙蕖 fúqú, 菡萏 hàndàn. The roots of the lotus are planted in the mud at the bottom of a pond or river, and the leaves float on the water surface, with the stems of the flowers rising above the leaves. The rhizome (藕 ǒu) is used in cooking, and the root is used in medicine. In Budd. a symbol of purity. Often associated punningly in lit. with 憐 lián, affection, sympathy. a. 青蓮 qīnglián, “blue lotus,” Indian waterlily (Nymphaea caerulea, Skt. nīlotpala), esp. associated with the bodhisattva Mañjuśrī. b. 睡蓮 shùilián, “sleeping lotus,” pygmy waterlily (Nymphaea teragona), white-flowered. 2. 木蓮 mùlián, “woody lotus,” manglietia (Manglietia fordiana), stately evergreen tree similar to magnolia, with white or straw-yellow blossoms that resemble lotus blossoms, hence the name; also ⦿ 薜茘 bìlì, climbing fig.
