(Budd.) sutra(s) (Skt. sūtra), the scriptures supposedly spoken by the Buddha, all of which begin with “Thus I have heard” (rushi wo wen 如是我聞), forming first and most important of 3 major divisions of Budd. canon (tripiṭaka), along with vinaya texts of monastic discipline (lü 律) and commentaries or explications of doctrine (lun 論). b. (Dao.) scripture(s), sacred and pre-cosmic texts issuing from the void and formed from primordial qi (yuanqi 元氣), transcribed into celestial script by the divinities and eventually revealed in vulgar human script to select persons. 4. align, regularize, arrange, organize; be fundamentally concerned with; e.g. 經國 jīngguó, bring the state into proper (political and moral) alignment; 經濟 jīngjì, organize and relieve (the world and its people); 經綸 jīnglún, lay out basic web, for regularization (of government, ideas, etc.); 經營 jīngyíng, arrange with care. 5. meridians, north-south orientation of route or area. a. basic circulatory channels or conduits of qi (pneuma) and blood in body, often paired with 絡 luò (as “ducts and links”). b. guideways, pathways, layout of rivers forming geographical organization of territory. 6. passage, of time or through space or experience; e.g. 三年之經 sānnián zhi jīng, after a passage of 3 years; 經過 jīngguò, pass through (a place or an experience); also (med.), pay a call on, stop by, visit; also (med.), the moment at hand, the immediate experience. 7. to hang oneself. 8. (Budd.) early trns. for Skt. dharma (usu. 法 fǎ 6).
