| 释义 | »» 璇 xuán MC zjwen 1. jadestone, gemstone; descriptive of something finely decorated, e.g. (med.) 璇閨 xuánguī, “jadestone boudoir,” ornately accoutered women’s quarters. 2. revolving or swiveling jade, jade-cog. a. sgl. or in cmpd. 天璇 tiānxuán, “Heaven’s Jade-cog,” 2nd star of the Big Dipper (β Ursae Majoris, = Merak). b. 璇璣 xuánjī, “Jade-cog and Armil,” the four stars of the bowl of the Dipper (α, β, γ, δ Ursae Majoris, = Dubhe, Merak, Phecda, Megrez); also, an ancient astronomical device, supposedly made at behest of the sage-king Shun 舜, reputedly the swiveling mechanism of an armillary sphere; also, “turning sphere,” the constellations of heaven. c. 璇璣圖 xuánjītú, “design of the turning sphere,” said to be a multicolored brocade pattern of 840 graphs (29 horizontal columns by 29 vertical columns, with center spot blank) woven by Su Hui 蘇蕙 (fl. ca. 350) and sent to her husband Dou Tao 竇滔, comprising more than 200 poems when read in various patterns vertically, horizontally, diagonally, backwards, forwards, circularly, etc. d. 璇璣玉衡 xuánjī yùhéng, “Jadestone Armil and Jade Transverse,” the bowl and handle of the Dipper; also, reputedly the ancient armillary sphere and sighting tube; also > the dome of heaven.
