定义

美国波温关于世界的存在的理论体系，源于人格（自我）的存在是最真实的存在这一基本思想。 波温认为，人所经验到的世界上的一切都是相对于人格而存在的，宇宙是人格的宇宙。人格是多数的。每一人格都独立存在，并决定其所经验到的世界的存在；每一人格又都是有限的，其经验世界只属于他自己，不能确定这个世界是否也是他人的世界。但个人不能只在内在的意识中生活，必须与他人交往，有与其他人共同的世界。为此就需假定有一超乎个体的有限人格之上而又能把他们联系起来的力量，它就是作为无限人格的上帝。有限人格经验中的世界只是他个人的，但各个有限人格经验中的世界都存在于作为无限人格的上帝的思想和计划之中，实即由上帝所已安排的。共同的经验世界，通过上帝，各个独立的个人之间就可发生交往。波温以此建立了一个以上帝为源泉和归宿的人格的宇宙体系。人格体系来源于莱布尼茨的单子体系，有限人格相当于有限单子，无限人格相当于无限单子。不同的是波温又给自己的体系加上了强烈的伦理学色彩，认为宇宙中的一切均是作为无限人格的上帝创造的，而上帝创造的最高成就是道德价值。故人格是一种精神性的道德实体。人格宇宙的秩序是一种道德秩序。宇宙中事物的性质均刻有道德命令的铭记。这种观点在很大程度上又受到德国哲学家洛采的影响（冯契，2001：1168）。
