Fuchen Fly Whisk

定义

亦名拂子，拂尘。敦煌彩塑或壁画中某些菩萨或天女所执法物。初以大麈（鹿群中最高大者）尾制作。后亦用牦牛尾和马尾等作成。佛教以此为讲授指示之物；后又转化为扫除世俗垢尘之意。

Fuchen Fly Whisk: also known as fuzi; a religious object held by certain Bodhisattvas or flying apsaras in Dunhuang sculptures and murals. It was said to be originally made from the tail of an alpha elk, the largest from a herd. Later, horsetails and yak tails were also used to make a fuchen. In Buddhism, it is a symbol representing the “sweeping away” of ignorance with Buddhist teachings and of “getting rid” of worldly desires and mental afflictions.
