魔王波旬，欲界第六天之他化自在天主。其常率眷属向人界作为佛道的障碍。但从大乘之法门来看，他是深位的菩萨，以大方便力现为魔王，教化众生。

Mara is the owner of Parinirmita-vaśavartin (the heaven of devas with power over the creations of others)—the sixth heaven of the Desire Realm. He is said to have led his daughters to hinder the Buddha’s attainment of enlightenment. From the perspective of the Mahayana branch of Buddhism, however, he is a bodhisattva of high status, who takes the disguise of a demon in order to help sentient beings.
