“Karma Story of King Bimbisara’s Maid Gongdeyi Ascending to Heaven”

唐代因缘类作品。叙述王舍大城统治者频婆娑罗王深敬三宝，后因年老难往山林礼谒，大臣建议求佛发爪造塔礼拜；又叙频婆娑罗王后宫綵女功德意舍命扫佛堂，被害后升天，又还下界供养于佛，佛为众比丘说其中因缘。

A story about karma, known as yuanqi or yinyuan in Chinese, from the Tang Dynasty. According to the story, King Bimbisara of Magadha was a great devotee of the Buddha, but as he grew old, it was more difficult for him to worship the Buddha by crossing forests and hills; therefore, some high officials advised him to ask the Buddha for some hair and nails to construct a stupa for worship whenever he wished; after the stupa was constructed, Gongdeyi, a palace maid, was devoted to cleaning the stupa area but was killed by Ajatashatru, the son of Bimbisara. After her death, with her merit, the maid was able to ascend into heaven. Shortly after that, she descended into the world again to become a devotee of the Buddha; then the Buddha explained the karma of the story to the Sangha (community of monks and nuns).
