本姓乔达摩，名悉达多，佛教创始人，生卒年约在公元前565~公元前485年。释迦牟尼是佛教徒对他的尊称，释迦是其种族名，意思是能；牟尼意思是“仁”“儒”“忍”“寂”，释迦牟尼合起来就是“能仁”“能儒”“能忍”“能寂”等的意思。相传他是古代北印度迦毗罗卫国（今尼泊尔境内）净饭王的太子。

Shakyamuni Buddha is the founder of Buddhism，whose surname is Gautama and given name is Siddhartha (565-485 BC). Sakya, his family name, means capability, while Muni means benevolence, knowledge, tolerance, and solitude. Hence, “Shakyamuni”, meaning the sage of the Shakya people, is called by Buddhists to show their respect. He was the son of King Shuddhodana, the prince of Kapilavastu State in ancient northern India (present-day Nepal).
