Storytelling (Shuo Hua)

古代说唱艺术。隋唐时把讲故事称为“说话”，敦煌本《辞道场文》(北柰46)有“说话还同父母因”的词句，似指讲佛经故事。至宋代“说话”就成为一种专门技艺，出现很多专业的说话人。

An ancient performance of storytelling known as shuohua (telling stories) during the Sui and Tang Dynasties, as mentioned in a line in Words upon Leaving the Place of Practice (Ci Daochang Wen) recorded in Vol. 46 of Nai Collection in National Library of China. The line reads: “The monks also told stories about the predestined relationship between parents and children,” which seems to refer to the telling of stories in Buddhist scriptures. Up until the Song Dynasty, storytelling, or shuohua, was developed into a special profession with the emergence of many professional storytellers.
