比丘的法衣，因为出家比丘所穿的法衣，都要染成浊色，故袈裟是依染色而立名的。又因其形状为许多长方形割截的小布块缝合而成，有如田畔，故又名“割截衣”或“田相衣”，亦称“福田衣”。

　Kasaya are the robes worn by male and female Buddhist monks, named after the brown or saffron dye used to color them. They are made from discarded fabric and have a pattern reminiscent of a rice paddy. Thus kasaya are also referred to as “rag robes” or “field robes”.
