衲衣【英】

Patchwork Robe

定义

僧衣之一种。拾取世人遗弃废旧布片，镶成小方块，然后缀成长方形袈裟以为佛教僧侣法服。《大乘义章》十五曰："言衲衣者，朽故破弊缝衲供身。"衲衣有三种，一种为五衲衣；一种为百衲衣；还有一种为山水衲。

It is a type of Buddhist vestment. It is made by collecting old pieces of cloth, which lay people have discarded, and sewing the pieces into small square patches and then mending them into a rectanglular kasaya. It is said in Chapter Fifteen of Essay on the Meaning of Mahayana that the patchwork robe is used to wrap the body by sewing and mending old and torn patches. There are three types of patchwork robes: the five patchwork robe, the hundred patchwork robe and the landscape patchwork robe.
