定义

自然宗教是指以自然事物和自然力为崇拜对象的宗教。广泛存在于原始社会。由于生产力和认识能力的低下，原始人对自然现象不理解，又对许多自然事物和自然力(诸如河流、山岳、风、雨、日、月之类)既有所依赖又有所畏惧。在人们的眼里，自然事物和自然力同人一样均有意志，故可对之敬拜以表感谢或求告。后世对河神、山神、日神等的崇拜，只在一定程度上体现了自然宗教的痕迹，但已不是自然宗教。严格意义的自然宗教，一般认为具有两大特征：(1)将自然事物和自然力本身直接视作具有意志之对象而加以崇拜;(2)尚未产生掌管这些对象之神灵的观念。（金炳华，2003：693）。从比较宽泛意义上所理解的自然宗教，其思想观念和崇拜形式还包括与自然崇拜直接相关的万物有灵论、拜物教、图腾崇拜等。但严格意义上的自然宗教与后来崇拜山神、海神、河神、日神等自然神的宗教亦有区别，因为在作为最初宗教形态的自然崇拜中人们虽已开始对各种自然物和自然力产生出超自然化的神圣感觉及宗教认识，却尚未形成具有掌管这些自然对象的神灵存在之观念，即没有构成以超自然体为形式的抽象神灵观。（自然宗教.via:
