用以描述自然界中不同相互作用的特性的哲学范畴。线性与非线性的一个明显区别是叠加性是否有效。在一个系统中，如果两个不同因素的组合作用只是两个因素单独作用的简单叠加，这种关系或特性就是线性的。反之，如果一个系统中一个微小的因素能够导致用它的幅值无法衡量的结果，这种关系或特性就是非线性的。相应地，具有叠加性的系统，是线性系统;反之，则属于非线性系统。混沌理论、分形理论等非线性研究指出分叉、突变、对初始条件的敏感依赖性、长期行为不可预见性、自相似性等，是非线性系统共有的性质，分数维、标度律、普适性等是对非线性系统作定量描述的普适概念。自然界中大量存在的是非线性相互作用，非线性特性不是细枝末节，而是基本特征和本质所在，线性系统只不过是一部分简单非线性系统在一定条件下的近似（彭漪涟等，2010）。
