Fenben, or chalk powder draft, is a preparatory draft or sketch for reproduction. A common technique of traditional Chinese painting is to prick holes with a needle along the lines of a painting draft and then tap them with a bag filled with chalk powder. The dots of powder are then linked together to form lines before the formal painting is finished.
