定义

社会物质生活条件是指人类社会的进行一切物质生活所赖以存在和发展的各物质要素的总和（廖盖隆等，1993：326）。马克思和恩格斯倡导一切要从现实的前提出发，批判德国唯心主义历史理论，曾在《德意志意识形态》一书中说到：“这是一些现实的个人，是他们的活动和他们的物质生活条件，包括他们已有的现成的和由他们自己的活动创造出来的物质生活条件”（马克思等，1995：67）。斯大林认为社会物质生活条件包括人类社会赖以生存的自然条件即地理环境，一定数量、质量、密度的人口因素，人类生活及社会生产所必需的物质资料的生产方式。三要素之间相互作用，相互影响。只有拥有适宜的地理环境和必要的人口因素，物质资料的生产才得以进行；只有进行了物质资料的生产，地理环境和人口因素对社会发展的作用才能得以实现，否则只是一般的自然条件。地理环境、人口因素和物质资料的生产方式三者又共同推动了社会的发展。地理环境和人口因素是人类生产及社会发展的必要条件，社会是自然的社会，它不能脱离自然，不能脱离地理环境而单独存在，而人是社会的主体，没有人口就不成其为社会，地理环境和人口因素在一定程度上阻碍或推动着社会发展。物质资料的生产方式是人类社会生存的前提，是物质资料获得的必然途径，是社会发展的主要因素，它决定了社会的性质和变革的方向（金炳华，2003：295）。
