社会党也称“社会民主党”、“社会民主工党”和“工党”等。1869年第一个工人政党——德国社会民主工党（爱森纳赫派）成立。19世纪70—80年代，欧美各国普遍建立的社会主义政党也都使用社会民主工党这个名称。这些政党一般都把争取社会主义和民主制视为自己的主要任务。马克思和恩格斯认为这个名称不科学，它没有明确表示出无产阶级政党的最终目的是实现共产主义。由于这个名称当时尚未妨碍革命工作，他们容忍了这个提法。1871年巴黎公社失败后，欧洲各国的社会主义者分别成立了“社会民主党”，或“社会党”，1889年，恩格斯组织各国社会民主党建立了第二国际。第一次世界大战爆发后，第二国际的绝大多数社会民主党都公开背叛社会主义，支持本国资产阶级政府参加帝国主义战争，从而导致第二国际破产。1917年，列宁在《四月提纲》中建议抛弃“社会民主党”这件“肮脏的外衣”，改名为共产党。1918年俄共（布）第七次代表大会决定更改党的名称为俄国共产党（布尔什维克）。十月革命胜利后，各国右派社会民主党攻击无产阶级革命和无产阶级专政，反对新生的苏维埃政权。第二次世界大战以后，一些社会民主党着手筹备成立国际组织。1951年，在联邦德国法兰克福召开国际社会党代表大会，正式宣告社会党国际的成立。近些年来，许多国家社会民主党提出了一些具有进步作用的政治主张（刘佩弦，1988：354）。美国、葡萄牙、爱尔兰、智利等国家也有社会党。
