定义

目的是人在思想中对行动的结果以及实现这种结果的途径的预计。动物的行为是受本能支配的，而人是有意识的，人的行为在本质上来说是有意识的行为。人在实际地改造现实事物之前，已经在自己的头脑中预想出它完成之后的样子，并且系统地设计出达到这样预期结果的途径，这就是人的行为的目的性，它是人的自觉的能动性的表现。机械唯物主义不承认人的自觉的能动性，把人的有目的的行为归结为本能的活动。而唯心主义则把人的行为的目的性绝对化，把目的看做是不依赖于客观世界的、观念中自生的东西。列宁指出：“实际上，人的目的是为客观世界所引起并以它为前提的……”。目的是人对于某种对象的需要在意识中的反映，是在思想上对对象所作的某种模拟，因此它还停留在观念的形态，必须通过实践来实现目的。实践的结果必然与目的存在差异，因为实践活动比它的思想设计更丰富。因此，目的并不是一经形成就一成不变地僵死的东西，而是在实践过程中不断变化着的，最终目的是与许多具体目的联系着的。此外，目的的实现有赖于使用适宜的手段，如果手段不适宜，即使是正确反映客观世界的目的也是难于获得预期的结果的（卢之超，1993：597-598）。
