亦称“18世纪法国唯物主义”。18世纪法国唯物主义哲学思想、理论的统称。它是继承和发展古希腊罗马德谟克里特、伊壁鸠鲁和卢克莱修等的唯物主义思想，以及17世纪英国经验论者和笛卡儿、斯宾诺莎等哲学家的唯物主义思想，概括和总结当时的力学、化学、生物学等自然科学发展的最新成果，从批判封建专制制度、宗教神学和形而上学的斗争中发展起来的。主要代表有拉美特利、狄德罗、爱尔维修和霍尔巴赫等。认为自然是一个物质与运动相结合的大机械系统。物质是客观实在的。在认识论方面，继承和发展唯物主义反映论传统，特别是F.培根和洛克的经验理论，批判天赋观念和内省经验的观点，探索感性认识与理性认识的关系，在一定程度上克服了17世纪经验论的局限性。认为人具有无限的认识能力，物质世界及其规律是人们认识的对象，感觉是认识的唯一来源。感觉是客观事物作用于感官的结果，是完全可靠的。在无神论方面，把无神论与唯物主义结合起来，坚持理性的原则，批判教会和宗教。在伦理思想方面，把唯物主义与伦理学结合起来。认为人的幸福不在来世而在尘世，反对禁欲主义。在政治思想方面，他们从唯物主义观点出发，批判君权神授论，用人的眼光考察社会和国家，提出自然状态说和社会契约论，批判封建专制制度，论证资产阶级理想王国。认为君主的权力来自契约，应受契约的约束。如果君主实行暴政，剥夺人民的基本权利，人民有权推翻它。他们一般不主张暴力革命，而把社会改革的希望寄托于开明君主和天才人物。18世纪法国唯物主义由于受到当时自然科学发展水平和社会政治经济条件的制约，具有机械性、形而上学和唯心史观的局限性。但它在实践上促进1789年的法国资产阶级革命，在理论上使唯物主义获得进一步发展，并对空想社会主义和马克思主义的形成起过积极作用。（金炳华，2001:322）
