邓小平1984年6月30日会见第二次中日民间人士会议日方委员会代表团时谈话的一部分。编入《邓小平文选》第3卷。指出：什么叫社会主义，什么叫马克思主义，我们过去对邓小平理论这个问题的认识不是完全清醒的。马克思主义最注重发展生产力。社会主义阶段的最根本任务就是发展生产力，社会主义的优越性归根到底要体现在它的生产力比资本主义发展得更快一些、更高一些，并且在发展生产力的基础上不断改善人民的物质文化生活。社会主义要消灭贫穷，贫穷不是社会主义，更不是共产主义。我们的政治路线，是把四个现代化建设作为重点，坚持发展生产力，始终扭住这个根本环节不放松。发展要尽可能快一点，这就要求对内把经济搞活，对外实行开放政策。现在的世界是开放的世界，关起门来搞建设是不行的，发展不起来。必须对外开放，吸引外资，学习国外先进的科学技术和管理。这就是我们的构想，这条道路叫做建设有中国特色的社会主义的道路。 （金炳华，2003：855-856）

2. Some people in rural areas and cities should be allowed to get rich before others. It is only fair that people who work hard should prosper.
