定义

亦称宗教人种学、宗教民族学。宗教人类学是宗教从信仰的需要出发而提出的人生学说，它主要涉及一些与人生意义相关的问题，其内容与科学人类学不相涉（冯天策，2000：111）。宗教人类学最初是从社会人类学和文化人类学中发展而来的，社会人类学和文化人类学一开始就与宗教文化的研究密切交融，而在促成宗教人类学独立的过程中作出开创性贡献的，有赫伯特·斯宾塞的1826年提出的普遍进化论包括宗教进化。英国学者泰勒被尊为人类学之父，他在《原始文化——关于神化、哲学、宗教、艺术和风俗的发展研究》（1871年）一书中用万物有灵论解释宗教，运用进化论观点分析宗教信仰的进化历程（宗教人类学.via：
http://baike.baidu.com/item/%E5%AE%97%E6%95%99%E4%BA%BA%E7%B1%BB%E5%AD%A6/2508254）。宗教人类学始于19世纪，研究处于无文字阶段的原始民族中的宗教信仰及其各种因素、探索远古时代的原始宗教。随着西方殖民扩张和传教活动发展，宗教学家在大洋洲、非洲等地的原始部落中进行实地考察，掌握了大量土著文化及其宗教资料，使宗教人类学得到迅速发展。宗教人类学着重传统的田野调查、统计学及象征体系的比较方法（黄保罗，2008：483-484），此外，弗洛伊德和容格的精神分析方法，也对现代宗教人类学的发展产生了一定的影响。宗教人类学借助人类学的综合理论视野考察、分析宗教现象时，形成了这一学科特有的研究理念和研究方法，由此形成了不同的学术流派。概括起来，宗教人类学的主要理论流派有以下几种：以英国社会人类学家弗雷泽为代表的进化论（又称巫术论），以英国社会人类学家、功能主义创始人马林诺夫斯基为代表的功能论（陈浩等，2006：174-176），以英国人类学家泰勒为代表的万物有灵论，以英国人类学家马雷特为代表的前万物有灵论，以德国人类学家施米特为代表的原始神论，以及以法国列维·施特劳斯为代表的神话结构学说（金炳华，2003：692）。现代宗教人类学呈现出流派纷纭的格局，但多集中于阐释宗教以及神话、仪式的象征性和意义。
