The Four Universal Vows of a Buddha or Bodhisattva

定义

一切菩萨初发心时，必发此四种广大之愿，故又称“总愿”，即众生无边誓愿度、烦恼无边誓愿断、法门无尽誓愿学、佛道无上誓愿成。

　When a bodhisattva makes an initial determination to seek enlightenment, each makes four great vows, and hence these vows are called “universal vows”. The four vows are: (1) to save all sentient beings, without limitation; (2) to put an end to all passions and delusions, however numerous; (3) to study and learn all methods and means, without end; (4) to become perfect in the supreme law of Buddha.
