定义

《乌托邦》全名为《关于最完美的国家制度和乌托邦新岛的既有益又有趣的全书》，是16世纪初期英国著名政治家、空想社会主义奠基人托马斯·莫尔的代表作，1516年在比利时出版。该书借一个航海家谈海外奇遇的方式，描述了一个具有理想社会制度的“乌有之乡”。莫尔在这部著作中猛烈地抨击了暴君统治，将贵族比作不劳而获的雄蜂，把英国资本主义原始积累时期的圈地运动辛辣地称为羊吃人，深刻地指出私有制是万恶之源，并天才地勾勒了未来新社会制度的轮廓（孙鼎国等，1998：952）。书中激烈抨击了当时英国和欧洲各国的种种不道德不合理的现象，指出私有制是万恶之源，必然造成贫富的对立。乌托邦人把道德理解为身心的愉快即享乐，但这种享乐必须不妨碍他人和社会的公共利益。莫尔在书中所表达的以社会制度和物质生活条件解释道德的思想，使他远远高出了当时的人文主义者的水平，深深地影响了后来的空想社会主义理论。作者还天才地提出了一种乌托邦国家的设想，这个国家消灭了剥削、城乡对立、专制、寄生生活，但这个社会是以农业和手工业为经济基础的，而且还保留奴隶和宗教。作为近代第一本空想社会主义著作，其社会主义观点虽不科学，但对其后社会主义思想的发展，及西方政治、伦理、社会科学的发展，都产生了极大的影响（宋希仁，1989：186）。
