Wudai-Caoyi (Wu Style and Cao Model)

中国画术语，指疏体和密体两种相对的绘画风格。为敦煌壁画唐代和北朝的两种画风。“吴带”即笔势飘举简练，圆转，衣带宽松，飘带似风吹动，给人以满壁生风之感。曹衣笔法稠密重叠，衣服紧窄，描写佛等给人以紧贴肌肤如初出水面，所以又称“曹衣出水”。

Wudai-Caoyi (The Wu Style and Cao Model): refers to the two styles of painting ancient Chinese robes densely or sparsely which were created respectively in the Tang Dynasty and the Northern Dynasties. In the wudai (meaning “Wu Daozi’s painting of sashes”) style, a flowing and neat brushwork makes the loose and wide robe with a long sash flying up as if there is wind blowing. In the caoyi (meaning “Cao Zhongda’s painting of robes”) style, the robe is closely pleated with incised drapery folds and is clinging to the body of a Buddha as though wet; therefore, it is also known as caoyi chushui (“Cao's style of painting robes rising out of the water”).
