定义

成文历史出现以前的宗教。可划分为前石器时代，中石器时代，新石器时代和青铜器时代宗教。实质属原始宗教，但一般专指从考古发掘和典籍所载远古传说中得知的宗教。是研究宗教起源问题的重要课题之一。有些从考古发掘遗址中所发现的文明社会初期的宗教，实际上已具有某些简单的文字或文字雏形的记录，但极不完整，且至今尚无人能详尽辨认。这类宗教，有时为研究上的方便也被列为史前宗教，例如，意大利半岛的伊特鲁利亚宗教，中美洲、南美洲的玛雅宗教和印加宗教等。中国从殷墟甲骨中发现的宗教现象，有时也被列入此类（金炳华，2003：701）。
