Chanting of Hymns and Praises (Zuo Fan)

指僧徒在佛教讲经、斋会、六时行道、道场忏法时举唱梵呗。唐代俗讲多行此仪。俗讲仪式，提到“夫为俗讲，先作梵了，次念菩萨两声。”

It refers to the singing of fanbai praises by monks in Buddhist occasions including sutra-preaching, food-offerings to monks (zhai hui in Chinese), alms-giving at the Six Times (liushi xingdao in Chinese) and the ceremony for confessing. The ritual of praise-chanting was frequently performed in sutra-preaching for lay people in the Tang Dynasty. An example reads: “in conducting sutra-preaching for lay people, the monks first chanted fanbai praises and then prayed to the Buddha for two times”.
