1.一年生水草，茎叶都有刺，开紫花。果实叫芡实，外皮有刺。种子的仁可以吃，可以制淀粉。也叫“鸡头” euryale ferox, also called jītóu, an annual water plant with thorns on leaves and stems, bearing purple flowers; with fruits (called qiànshí) having thorns on the skin, seeds edible and used in making starch
