1.交付，送与 give; grant：～他一本书 gěi tā yī běn shū give him a book/ 是谁～你的 Shì shéi gěi nǐ de? Who gave you this? ext. 把动作或态度加到对方 impose actions or attitudes upon sb; give：～他一顿批评 Gěi tā yī dùn pīpíng. Give him a dressing-down.
2.介词 prep. 1.替，为 for the benefit of; for the sake of：医生～他看病 Yīshēng gěi tā kànbìng. The doctor examined and prescribed for him./ ～大家帮忙 gěi dàjiā bāngmáng do a favour to everyone 2.被，表示遭受 (used in a passive sentence, denoting "suffering" or "being subjected to")：～火烧掉了 gěi huǒ shāodiào le be burnt up/ ～拉走了 gěi lāzǒu le be dragged away
3.助词 aux. 1.跟前面“让”、“叫”、“把”相应，可有可无 (used correlatively with words such as ràng, jiào or bǎ in front, and sometimes it can be omitted)：窗户叫风(～)吹开了 Chuānghu jiào fēng (gěi) chuīkāi le.
