1.植物吐穗开花，多指庄稼 (of plants) give forth ears and flowers, usu. indicating grain crops：高粱～穗了 Gāoliɑng xiùsuì le. The sorghum has been putting forth ears./ 六月六看谷～ liùyuè liù kàn gǔ xiù The crops begin to give forth ears on June 6 th.
2.特别优异的 excellent; especially outstanding ( comb. 优- yōu- excellent)：～异 xiùyì outstanding/ ～挺 xiùtǐng straight and graceful ［秀才 -cɑi］封建时代科举初考合格的人。泛指书生 one who passed the imperial examination at the county level; a general term for intellectuals
3.聪明，灵巧 clever; ingenious; skillful; nimble：内～ nèixiù be intelligent without seeming so/ 心～ xīnxiù be intelligent without looking so
