1.数目，一般用于量词和“半、千、万、亿”前 used before measure words or "bàn", "qiān", "wàn", "yì" ：～本书 liǎng běn shū two books/ ～匹马 liǎng pǐ mǎ two horses/～个月 liǎng ge yuè two months/ ～半 liǎng bàn two halves/ ～万 liǎng wàn twenty thousand ［“两”和“二”用法不全同 The use of "liǎng" and that of "èr" are not completely the same. 读数目字只用“二”不用“两”，如“一、二、 三、 四； 二、 四、 六、 八” When counting numerals, only èr is used, not liǎng, eg. "yī, èr, sān, sì; èr, sì, liù, bā." 小数和分数只用“二”不用“两”，如“零点二(0.2)，三分之二，二分之一” Decimal fractional use "èr", not "liǎng", eg. "líng diǎn èr" (0.2), sān fēn zhī èr (2/3), èr fēn zhī yī (1/2). 序数也只用“二”，如“第二，二哥” Ordinal numbers also use "èr" only, eg. "dì-èr" (second), "èrgē" (one's 2nd elder brother) 在一般量词前，用“两”字不用“二” Use "liǎng", not "èr", before an ordinary measure word. 如 eg.：“两个人用两种方法” "liǎng ge rén yòng liǎng zhǒng fāngfǎ" Two men use two methods./ “两条路通两个地方” "liǎng tiáo lù tōng liǎng gè dìfɑng" Two roads lead to two places. 在传统的度量衡单位前，“两”和“二”一般都可用，用“二”为多 Before a traditional word of weights and measures, usu. both "liǎng" and "èr" can be used, "èr" is used more often (“二两”不能说“两两” "èr liǎng" but not "liǎng liǎng")。新的度量衡单位前一般用“两”，如“两吨、两公里” Before a word of new weights or measures, generally "liǎng " is used, eg. "liǎng dūn, liǎng gōnglǐ". 在多位数中，百、十、个位用“二”不用“两”，如“二百二十二” In a number that has several figures, the hundred's place, ten's and unit's use "èr", not "liǎng", eg. "èrbǎi èrshíèr" (222). “千、万、亿”的前面，“两”和“二”一般都可用，但如“三万二千”、“两亿二千万”，“千”在“万、亿”后，以用“二”为常 Before "qiān" (1 000), " wàn" (10 000), and "yì" (100 000 000), usu. both "liǎng" and "èr" can be used. But in cases such as "sānwàn liǎngqiān (32 000), liǎngyì èrqiān wàn" (220 000 000), where "qiān" follows "wàn" or "yì", "èr" is often used］
2.双方 both sides; either side：～便 liǎngbiàn be convenient to both; make things easy for both/ ～可 liǎngkě Both will do. or Either will do./ ～全 liǎngquán be satisfactory to both parties; have regard for both sides/ ～相情愿 liǎngxiāng-qíngyuàn by mutual consent; both parties being willing
3.表示不定的数目（十以内的） a few; some (less than ten)：过～天再说吧 Guò liǎng tiān zài shuō bɑ. Let's leave it for a couple of days./ 他真有～下子 Tā zhēn yǒu liǎngxiàzi. He is really smart.
4.市制重量单位，1斤是10两（旧制1斤是16两） liǎng, a traditional unit of weight, equaling 1/10 jīn (In former times, 1 jīn equals 16 liǎng) |
